Cancer is group of over 200 systemic diseases manifested locally by abnormal cell growth resulting in a tumor. Of the approximately 200 different kinds of cells in the human body, cancers are known for each of them. In some cases, exposure to carcinogens causes cancer, and the cancer is an interaction between a carcinogen and protective means mobilized by the organism. Cancer is a group of many related diseases.
Cancer is a scary word. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. But early diagnosis of cancer can lead to better treatment options.
There are many kinds of cancer:
- Breast cancer is a malignant (cancerous) tumor that starts from cells of the breast.
* Mesothelioma
- Skin cancer, which is common in the United States, is most likely to occur in those who have fair skin, light-colored eyes, and light colored hair. Limiting direct exposure to the sun, and using a good quality sun block when in the sun, are the two most recommended skin cancer prevention suggestions.
- First lady Laura Bush says she first thought a sore on her right shin that turned out to be skin cancer was an insect bite.
- Ovarian cancer. Currently, a woman's lifetime risk of developing ovarian cancer is 1.7 percent.
- Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, killing more than 95 percent of its victims. If pancreatic cancer is found early, surgical removal may cure it.
- Until the 1930s gastric cancer was the leading cause of cancer mortality in the US.
How do cancers grow?
- It is believed that normally the immune system erradicates pre-cancerous cells before they can grow into tumors.
- A new insight is changing the direction of research: it now appears that cancer cells make proteins that tell the immune system to leave them alone.
- Some researchers believer there is a link between long term stress, such as in divorce, and the appearance of cancer.
- Exercise may help prevent the occurence of cancer. Researchers found the risk of endometrial cancer was cut by as much as 30% by physical activity such as household chores and walking. news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3578405.stm
Is cancer contagious?
- There are no known contagious cancers in humans. However, the human papiloma virus is frequently cited as a cause of cervical cancer, which was once a leading cause of death in women.
