- Article summary: Paying For Listing With Search Results
- Despite the cliche "information wants to be free", the cost of producing information is usually paid by advertisers with a product that they want to sell you. But usually, the advertisers are not allowed to set the editorial policy, or else the content source looses the trust of it's readers.
- The big question when search engines let sites pay to be included in the search results: But do Internet searchers get good, accurate information? Or are the results of the search skewed to favor those who've paid to be in the index? The jury's out on that one.
- Yahoo's VP of Search, Tim Cadogan, says "If you pay, it has no input to where you're ranked." Paying will not cause a site of useless information to appear in the results.
- Ask Jeeves experience is that useful results are diluted by those who pay to get in the index. Last week they dropped a program that guaranteed a listing for payment. Now they are like Yahoo where they will take your money as a "reviewing fee" with no guarantee you'll get added to the directory.
- Larry Page, cofounder of Google, commented If you're going to charge money for something, you've got to provide value for it, Page said. If you say you're going to charge people, and you're not going to change the rankings, why are they going to pay?
